Dowry- It's origin, purpose and the impact of awareness

1.  How did the practice of dowry originate, and how has its purpose changed over time in different cultures?

  • Dowry's beginnings are unclear, but it started in the pre-colonial era. It could include things like land or money for her new life of a bride.  Over time, in many places, dowry changed. Instead of helping the bride, it became a demand for money or valuable gifts from her family, often by the groom's family. This can cause huge financial problems and even violence if the bride's family can't pay. While dowry might still be a small, symbolic gift in some cultures, in others, it's become a harmful practice that treats women unfairly.
2. How can education and awareness help shift traditional gender expectations?

  • Learning and understanding about gender equality can change how we think about traditional roles. When people are educated about stereotypes and their harm, they begin to challenge old ideas. Education empowers everyone to choose their own path, not just what society expects based on their gender. By raising awareness of inequality, we can build a world of equal opportunity.
3. What role does globalization play in changing or preserving gender norms

Globalization has a complex effect on gender roles. It can bring in new ideas about equality and give women more opportunities through education, work, and access to information. This can challenge old traditions. On the other hand, it can also spread harmful stereotypes or be used to defend traditional roles, even if they're unfair.  So, globalization can both encourage change and help maintain some traditional gender norms, depending on the situation.

My Reflection of the visit to VAWC

We visited the VAWC as part of our community outreach for our exhibition. Over there we met Miss Hira (psychologist) who explained us very thoroughly and we got to explore the whole center. She even explained us a lot about domestic violence. I found it very interesting. We also got a chance to see some victims who were there to report their case. To address violence against women, a specialized center was created in 2017, in line with the 2016 Punjab Protection of Women Against Violence Act. This facility consolidates legal, judicial, medical, and psychological services, offering a holistic support system for victims.  In this center there are 4 different departments: The Police, Prosecution, Medical and Psychological. The Police Department: The Women Police Station of VAWC is an advanced and amazing police station. It includes reporting, FIR lodging and investigating. Furthermore, It has 2 detention areas, 1 for men and the other for women. It has a link with other police st...

PYP - EXHIBITION Exhibition is a project and an event where learners choose a real life issue and share their understanding by performances, social media blogs and more. After 6 months of researching by taking interviews, surveys, field visits, hands on activities and internet. Children also have to pick an IB action type ( advocacy, social justice, social entrepreneurship, participation and lifestyle choices) to represent their work. The exhibition helps learners to develop skills such as critical thinking, communication and collaboration. PYP exhibition is very important because it helps the learners develop skills and attributes that are essential for lifelong learning and becoming global citizens.
